The Almost Complete Life on Mars Soundtrack (Series 1)

By Howard | Published February 18, 2007

Life on Mars has just started again on the BBC – I’ve not got round to seeing the new episode yet (Sky+ has it stored away safely for me) but it seems the new series has provoked renewed interest in my previous post about the excellent soundtrack the first series had. It looks like the BBC have taken down the page I referenced to get the music information, so for the benefit of the many people who have asked for it, here’s The Almost Complete Life on Mars Soundtrack (Series 1). I expect I shall get together the Series 2 music once it’s complete…

  1. The song that plays in episode four of the first series when Sam and Gene find Jonie dead is ‘Wild Horses’ by The Rolling Stones on the dvd version it is replaced with ‘I can’t change it’ by Frankie Miller.

  2. Does anyone have any ideas about the song that is being played when Sam walks into The Warren to talk to joanny the dancer, who is practicing dancing?

  3. The song playing when Joanny is practicing dancing is ‘Gudbuy t’Jane’ by Slade

  4. Hi. Fabulous soundtrack. Has anybody gathered ALL of the music together yet onto a site? Several have mentioned they were in the process, but I don’t see any sites yet. I’ve been downloading for over a week now – and am only missing a few. If anyone needs a particular song emailing, lemme know and if it’s amongst those I have, I’ll oblige. Cheers …. too bad there’s no series three …

    Ste W

    PS – email is sdoubleu@hotmail.com

  5. Hey.

    Could anybody send me it?
If so please email me or add me to msn on

    emo-princess-89@hotmail.co.uk

It’s the only song i cant find

  6. Hi,

I am still missing three songs:
    Audience – The Big Spell
    Coloseum – I Can’t Live Without You
Three Degrees – Everybody gets to go to the Moon

If anybody has them or one of them, could you please send it to me at ngfftr@yahoo.com ?
    Thank you!

And if you need any other, just let me know and I’ll send it to you.

  7. Hi again and sorry for the delay in posting this. I’m still short of a couple of songs but in the meantime all of the others are up, running and ready for download.

For those of you not familiar with Multiply, you have to sign up with a valid email addy but it’s pretty straightforward and you don’t get any spam – honest. Hope everyone enjoys.

  8. can somebody tell me what the name of the song is in episode 4 series 1 when they pull the dead girls body from the canal at night

  9. Just to confirm that all the songs from LIFE ON MARS both the ones used in the TV series and the replacements used on the DVDs are now available free on my Multiply site – see previous message for link.

  10. For anybody who still doesn’t have the Three Degrees live track then go to this website:

    http://music.sina.com.cn/yueku/m/705580.html

here you can record it with the built-in Sound Recorder Accessory program in Windows located at:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sndrec32.exe

By default I think it only records 60 seconds but if you create yourself a blank 5 minute WAV file in any freely available sound editing program then you can open this in the Sound Recorder Accessory program and over-write it with this Three Degrees track from this point you may use Audacity or other program to convert the WAV to MP3 or whatever format – hope this helps some desperate soul who may not otherwise get to own a copy of this trach ;)

  11. Hi Andy, not trying to outdo you pal but the Three Degrees track, Everybody Gets To Go To The Moon(the live track) is available free on my Multiply site. I don’t have any commercial interest in Multiply, in spite of my constant plugging of it – I just want to make all this music available free for all LOM fans.

  12. If you want to hear lots of this music for free, go to jango.com. It’s an Internet radio site where you create stations. I’ve made one called ‘life on mars’ and my user name is kasey.

    Enjoy!

  13. In answer to the eralier question….

In the final episode, S2E8, when Sam and Nelson have the conversation about feeling and living at the pub, there is song playing in the background. Lyrics run along the lines of “I’m going to find a way/To become what I am”

…the song is “Decision/Indecision” by Atomic Rooster for the “In Hearing Of” album (which I’ve just ordered!)

  14. Fantastic! I’m a 70’s child (or well I was, am now a 36 year old!) who remembers most of the music from Life On Mars. I was desperate to know what the track was called on series 2 episode 4, where Gene, Sam, Ray and Chris were walking across the wasteland to the female body – thanks to this site, found it and am annoying my neighbours with it!

Excellent blog – thanks to all!

    Sparkster.

  15. I’m AMAZED that no-one has found or listed the ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ ukele track at the end of series 2 episode 8, when Sam emerges from hospital’s Hyde Ward. The artist is Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, (who recently died)and the track is -Somewhere Over The Rainbow-What A Wonderful World’.

Great blog, thanks for the info.

  16. In the first episode of the first series, I destinctly remember hearing the song “Feel so Good” by The Move. I am 100% sure. But nowhere on this InterWeb I can find any confirmation on this.

Brilliant series ofcourse, that goes without typing.

  17. I love everyone who spent time putting this together.

  18. Any news on ashes to ashes soundtrack anybody?

  19. Just downloaded that bittorrent you mentioned, not very good most of the songs were edited badly or something seemed to jump and miss half of the song.

  20. 8 and 29 are both cream white room!

  21. what was the song that was whistled?

  22. Song that was whistled? For he is a jolly good fellow

  23. The elvis song was spoken off by Hunt after being shot in the newspaper office, he said he wanted love me tender played at his funeral.

  24. If you go to ‘http://www.bbc.co.uk/lifeonmars/’ each episode of series 1 & 2 has track listings for Life On Mars

  25. Episode One Series Two a song was whistled all through the show. Can anyone tell me what the name of it was. It’s driving me crazy!!

  26. Not quite 100%.

The song is “Feel TOO good” by The Move.

Of course, I’m loving the series too.
We’re about half-way through series 2 here in Aus.

  27. Hi again all,

Due to changes by the nazi music police at Multiply.com you can no longer download any of the tracks I spent an age collating and uploading. However I’ve just uploaded all 112 songs(both series) on Megaupload.

    Links

    Series 1 328Mb Winzip file
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O4X1HV6P

    Series 2 278Mb Winzip file 54 tracks
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VOZ4VAVL

The songs are prefixed e.g. S1 EP3 T7 = Series 1 Episode 3 Track 7 for people who want to play them in order. Enjoy All

  28. Just spent the last week or so collecting all these songs and was only missing the Hair/Wadsworth song, so checked out the web and found this site and seen Mike K has them all for D/L.
Would have saved me hours :)
I’m downloading part 2 for the aforementioned song.
Congratulations if you have them all, I’ll compare our versions and keep the better ones :)

  29. Mike K, you are an absolute legend. Thanks so much for uploading all those, and for doing it all in order as well! I really appreciate the effort put into this.

  30. Thanks for this. Been working on the same tracklists and now i found this. and it will save me lots of work.

  31. Anyone know the song in S1E7 that the Hollies’ “I Can’t Tell the Bottom from the Top” leads into? It’s sort of jazzy/Austin Power-esque and it plays under the foot chase scene. It’s driving me mad.

  32. Hi Coleen, There were only 4 songs features in S1 EP7 and without checking this for accuracy on the DVD(my wife’s watching some crap on the TV at the mo. They are The Hollies – I Can’t Tell The Bottom From The Top; Peters And Lee – Welcome Home; Nina Simone – Sinner man; and; Atomic Rooster – Friday The 13th. I think the track you refer to is the Nina Simone one as that’s quite jazzy. Let me know if you just need that track and I’ll send you it. jimmyseal@btinternet.com

  33. Hi,

This site is great and the job you made is really amazing. I also found some references on Wikipedia. I have nearly downloaded most of the titles (late nights in front of my computer :-) ) with iTune. The only problem I’ve so far is that I can find neither Everybody Gets To Go To The Moon by Three Degrees nor Dance With The Devil by Cozy Powell. I’ve tried different ways to use the search engine and it just does not work. Any tip?

    Morwenna.

  34. Hi everyone! I just wanted to say that this place is seriously fantastic. Life on Mars finished here in Australia last Thursday…and I have since bought the DVDs and rewatched the whole thing. Such a great show.

Anyway I was making up my playlist when I found this place and was able to download the two big playlists that Mike put up. Thank you so much for that. My one problem was that the songs from the first and last two episodes of series two did not download (almost certainly my crappy internet’s fault). I’ve managed to track down most of the missing songs, but have had a problem with seven of them:

    BREAK THROUGH-ATOMIC ROOSTER (series 2, episode 1)
EVERYBODY GETS TO THE MOON-THREE DEGREES (series 2, episode 1)
    AIN’T GOT NO-DEREK WADSWORTH (series 2, episode 2)
    EVENING BLUE-TRAFFIC (series 2, episode 7)
DONE ME WRONG ALRIGHT-THE SWEET (series 2, episode 7)
    ROCK N ROLL DISGRACE-THE SWEET (series 2, episode 7)
DECISION/INDECISION-ATOMIC ROOSTER (series 2, episode 8…really really want this one :()

If anyone is possibly able to send any of these to my email ( popcornsoul@gmail.com ) I would be eternally grateful. Though technically I am already eternally grateful for what I’ve been able to get from this website.

    Thanks,
    Zoe

  35. can anyone tell me what the atmaspheric music is that plays in life on mars in the background, it usuallys precedes sam hearing voices, from the tv..etc..is is very haunting and atmaspheric. I have been searching everywhere for it, and yet cannot find it. It seems to be the one piece of music, that is not mentioned.

It is instrumental and atsmapheric, and runs all the way thru the series 1 and 2

Please help put me out of my misery lol
Many thanks for the help and for this great web site..keep up the good work guys!
    w

  36. I’m pretty sure that the music that you’re talking about Wendy is just the instrumental mood music made for the show. I might be wrong though.
I don’t think that you can download it from anywhere…it’d be awesome if you could.

    Zoe

PS: An update on the songs I’m missing…I managed to get the two Atomic Rooster ones. Still looking for the others though.

  37. terry the whistling song is bring me sunshine the morecome and wise signiture tune

  38. Glad that pepes here are enjoying the downloads. Morwena, if you let me have your email I can send you the couple of tracks that you need. That goes for anyone else here that doesn’t want to download the 2 big zip files I’ve posted above. jimmyseal@btinternet.com

  39. Hi :) I’ve got most of the songs from the series that i want, but i’m still missing “I Can’t Change It” by Frankie Miller. If anyone has this song could you please email it to me?
    my email is gabby.cain@live.com
    Thanks

  40. excellent work. Congratulations all round.

Does anyone know of a similar collection for ASHES TO ASHES and where to get it?

    Thanks

  41. Mmmm. A2A. Sorry, I haven’t even contemplated compiling the music for this follow up series. I guess my inspiration for doing LOM was a love of the great writing/acting and my nostalgic memeories of the 70s. A2A just doesn’t grab me I’m afraid. Apart from the 3 main characters appearing from LOM, Keeley Hawes was a piss poor replacement for John Simms both in terms of being believable and acting(though she did get slightly better as the series progressed. I thought that the storylines and general writing was also very inferior and even Phillip Glenister struggled with the poor scripts.

Anyway, I won’t depress you with any more negativity. The music side of A2A was pretty good considering it was set in the 80s and thinking about this as I write, I suppose that I should make an effort to pull together the songs at some point – but not until I get over my disappointment.

  42. Just a note on a song title mentioned above, there was a typo in it:

Bring Me Sunshine — Morecambe & Wise

  43. having a quick glance through your lists and i notice your missing “i can’t change it” by frankie miller from his first album. it is downloadable from i-tunes

  44. Dear Mike K
    Thankyou!

  45. Haven’t been here for a while but there’s still some activity here. So for those of you who can’t be bothered to read all the above posts, all the music from both series are still available on the links below. Again, if anyone just wants the odd track and can’t be bothered to download the complete series, contact me at jimmyseal@btinternet.com and I’ll send you what you want.
