Thank you also for posting this info. I spent several months trying different versions of SDM, different routers, IOS, etc. and was sure they were SDM compatible so then turned to Java, but didn't go back far enough so assumed a Windows 7 version issue, tried debugging, then something else, and then..., and then...., What a major pain, but I learned a few things along the way. Thank you! Thank you! for posting this info - tried searching everywhere with different search criteria and eventually gave up until today! Jre6u6 worked for me and from what I remember a while back, I did not have this issue on ADSM, but I can't recall if that software had the security audit feature in the same way and have since taken out our ASA5510.

Hi All,
Revisiting this issue since my previous post in July 2009 I have yet to find a solution for this other than run the older version of Java if you want the security audit feature to work.

To test this anew I just built a machine for my lab using W2k3 - Std. Ed. SP2 and Java 6-20. I removed the IE enhanced security feature and tested using SDM 2.5 with both Firefox 3.6.3 and IE 8.0.6. SDM started and ran just fine with either browser with the ongoing exception that the security audit feature just sits there stuck if invoked. I can then click on another item and SDM continues to function so it's not freezing up but simply doesn't go forward with the security audit feature. The router I was testing it with is a Cisco 2621XM 256x48 with Adv. Ent. 12.4 IOS.

I rolled Java back to 6-11 and tried starting SDM with Firefox 3.6.3. SDM gets to the SDM Launch page and sites "Loading SDM Please wait" with hour-glass and stays stuck there. Trying the same with IE 8.0.6 all seems to work including the security audit.

Absolutely amazing that software meant to manage security requires one to run an older (and one assumes less secure) version of another mainline software (java). Cisco stresses SDM heavily for the CCNA Sec Cert I am told yet leaves this issue "sucking wind!

One more POC why GUIs don't cut it - I'll take a cmdl anyday! :)

Cheers!

I do have the same problem with SDM 2.5 which gave me a day headache. Finally solved using IE 6.0 and JRE 1.6.0_07-b06. I think using FireFox 3.6.3 has some bugs as when I run SDM in firefox it will not recognize older java versions, as it does with IE 6.0. Security Audit now works as well as creating Site to Site VPNS :)

Yea, I had the same problem with java 6 update 18. I uninstalled that and let the computer restart with whatever version it chose. There are about 5 versions currently installed on my Win XP machine. The PC came up running Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b06) and now my SDM Security Audit is working. Thanks for the help.

This is STILL a problem, and boy am I glad I found this page. I actually updated Java once more thinking maybe I was on an old version. I never would have though I was on too new a version.

THANKS!!!

Hi,
Thanks for the information, I discovered the error on the Java console (IndexOutOfRange), and then searched of bugs in the SDM, it was a real headache.

Hi,
After removing a bit more of the slight hair I have left I did some experimenting and comparing. A WinXP Pro and a W2k3 machine both had Java 6u14 (build 1.6.0_11) on them and SDM would load and worked fine with the exception that the Security Audit wouldn't run.

Rolled both machines back to Java 6u11 and all's fine.

To note I'm using Firefox 3.51 for the browser.

I'm going to give the Version 6 Update 14 (build 1.6.0_14-b08) mentioned above a whirl and see what shakes!

Cheers!

But it seems that SDM work unstable and crashes on certain items.
