Calendar for TV

By Howard | Published March 11th, 2009

Because it is outstanding, and because they asked for people to link to them, it’s time to mention the Calendar for TV.  Your one stop shop for knowing what is airing and when – even taking into account time zones.  As someone who watches a lot of American TV, this is excellent for keeping track…

Poor Customer Service from iRobot UK (Roomba)

By Howard | Published June 30th, 2008

Update 18th July 2008: I called Domotec today and the difference in response was like night and day.  New component on it’s way to us now.  Horrah!
If you’d spoken to me or Lindsay recently you might have thought we were on comission from iRobot, the manufacturers of the Roomba vacuum cleaner. We’ve been raving…

Flickr's long photos

By Howard | Published April 18th, 2008

A test of Flickr’s long photos (video) service, showing Gnarly’s many sleeping positions via timelapse. A frame taken every 30 seconds played back at 24fps. Note that Sparkle cleans him when he gets onto the bed. Cute! Oh, and they appear to fight at the end too. :)
btw: how cool is Flickr video?

Howard and Lindsay Simpson…

By Howard | Published July 6th, 2007

The Simpsons Movie site has a cool way to turn yourself into a Simpsons character. Here’s me and Lindsay (click to enlarge). It’s slightly worrying that I appear to be a cross between Millhouse and Professor Frink.
Check Richard’s blog for a Simpson-ised Richard and Beth.

Testing the K800

By Howard | Published July 19th, 2006

I’ve been hankering after the K800i since it was announced some time ago. 3.2MP camera, 3G data, mp3 player, lots of memory and all sorts of other bells and whistles meant it looked like a good replacement for my Samsung D600 and my aging digital camera.
As it happens, I ended up buying a new…

Geek Behaviour

By Howard | Published May 31st, 2006

The image you see here was taken via a webcam situated on the corner of Bleeker Street and MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.  The guy standing by the lamp-post I’ve zoomed in on is Phil, who is on holiday in New York with Catherine.
So, why do I have this picture?  Because we’re geeks, that’s…

Budget SAN

By Howard | Published February 15th, 2006

This is the Netgear SC101, a budget (60 quid) SAN device. It takes two hard drives which it presents as storage to any client on the network running the Netgear software. Out of the box you can allocate storage to multiple drive letters, or even set up a pair of mirrored disks to protect your…

Toast is Life!

By Howard | Published January 22nd, 2006

I’m getting worried about Beth and her unhealthy interest in toast. I even tried to call an intervention the other day, before getting sucked into the tempting buttery goodness of toast addiction myself.

Fun and games with virtualisation.

By Howard | Published January 20th, 2006

I’ve spent the last few days building virtual environments to test various combinations of clusters and resiliency software.  Most of this was done in VMware because it’s what I’ve always used for virtualisation.  But, since I work for Microsoft, it seemed prudent to ensure we could replicate the environment using our own product.Â
So today I installed Microsoft Virtual…

XBox360 Backwards Compatibility

By Howard | Published December 14th, 2005

Working semi-regularly for Microsoft, I’m now even more aware of when people criticise the company. Sometimes it is justified, sometimes it’s not. Here’s a very funny critique of what Slashdot readers make of the Xbox360 and it’s backwards compatibility.
Funny. Rude, but funny.
